Epoq Legal have today announed Directlaw, a virtual law firm platform lets law firms engage with existing clients online and draw in new clients via the web. It leverages the same technology that major brands such as Halifax and RBS are using to offer online legal services, levelling the playing field for solicitors to compete with new entrants to the market.

Using Rapidocs®, Epoq’s web-enabled document automation system, clients seeking any one of a wide range of services complete an interview online, and their answers automatically create a detailed first draft document for the firm to review, advise on and, if required, amend before returning it to the client – or seeing the client face-to-face.

This focuses the solicitor’s time on providing value-added legal advice, rather than churning out boiler-plate documents. This allows them to charge a good rate – albeit cheaper to the client than before – but because they have to dedicate less time to the matter, the solicitor’s hourly rate effectively goes up. DirectLaw improves efficiency by enabling firms to handle a greater volume of work. More...

What is metadata?

Most software applications store information behind the scenes which you are not normally aware of. This information is used to run the application and provide the functionality that you see in day-to-day use.

This hidden information is generally called "metadata".

Although most applications store metadata to some extent, the main concern from the perspective of a lawyer is the wordprocessor; this being Microsoft Word in most modern law firms.

Problems arise when documents are sent outside of the firm by e-mail without the metadata being removed. Metadata that is not removed can be seen by the recipient of the document either in the normal course of working with the document or if the recipient looks specifically for hidden metadata.

Metadata can cause embarrassment and damage the reputation of the sender. More...

Lawyers and secretaries at Dechert LLP use DocXtools to reduce document corruption and avoid 11th hour document crises.

Dechert and Microsystems jointly configured a DocXtools “Traffic Signal” for the firm’s end users that helps them avoid “11th hour” document emergencies. Dechert rolled out the DocXtools “Traffic Signal” firm-wide to its lawyers, paralegals and secretaries.

“It is extremely beneficial for a user to be able to proactively check the health of a document and be directed  to the proper next step well in advance of a client or filing deadline,” said Gloria Webber, Development Engineer. “It puts our lawyers, secretaries and support staff at ease knowing that there is a quick document quality check that they can do. Since we deployed the ‘Traffic Signal throughout Dechert, our Word Processing and Help Desk groups are out ahead of document issues and their end users’ needs.”

“With the ‘Traffic Signal’ on their desktops, our lawyers can be confident that any problems will be caught and fixed early, no matter how many people are working on a document,” said Michael Shannon, Chief Information Officer for Dechert.

Dechert’s deployment and usage of the DocXtools “Traffic Signal” has reduced the number of document emergencies escalated to its support groups.
